  • Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho confirmed his club needs and wants a striker this summer
  • Mourinho is confident that he and his scouting team can sign a prolific striker before the window expires
  • RB Salzburg's Patson Daka and Metz's Habib Diallo are two of Tottenham's top targets

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Tottenham needs a striker and is confident about signing a good one before the transfer window closes. RB Salzburg star Patson Daka and Metz forward Habib Diallo have both emerged as top candidates.

Harry Kane has been the talisman of Tottenham Hotspur for years. However, Mourinho and the Spurs leadership have concluded that an additional goal scorer is necessary for this Premier League season, 90min reported.

"Yes, I want, I need a striker," Mourinho told the press ahead of Tottenham's Sunday, Sept. 13 match against Everton. "But I want to make it very, very clear that the club – the structure above me – knows that I need a striker and also wants a striker. Are we going to get one? I honestly believe so."

Despite not being able to "spend a fortune" on players, Mourinho believes that obtaining a good striker is necessary to give his squad "good balance."

However, Mourinho pointed out that signing a credible striker would not be easy as all clubs in the English top-flight, even reigning champion Liverpool, has been having trouble securing one.

"We realize that more than ever we need that," the Tottenham boss explained. "So yes we’re working on it. The other day Jurgen [Klopp] was saying that Liverpool is not a club of oligarchs and countries. We are the same."

However, the renowned manager remains confident that he and his scouting team will be able to sign a prolific striker before the window expires, concluding, “Every one of us is working in different areas to try to find a solution."

Daka is one of the top targets for the Spurs at the moment. The 21-year-old RB Salzburg star has been in fine form for the Austrian side, tallying a staggering 24 goals and eight assists in 31 games in the country’s top flight. He has also displayed versatility by proving he can also play out wide if necessary, Football.London reported.

But while it is understood that Tottenham has put Daka on its radar, his agent, who also happens to be a former Spurs striker, Freddie Kanoute, has informed his old club that his client wants to stay in Austria, according to Evening Standard.

Another notable striker linked to a move Tottenham is Metz forward Diallo. Recent reports from London revealed that the Spurs have revived their interest in the 25-year-old as the club hunts for a backup striker for Kane.
