After a devastating defeat to Manchester United, Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho insists one Red Devil should’ve been penalized.

The match between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday was plagued with controversies following a series of crucial calls from the officials.

At the eighth minute, Manchester United star midfielder Paul Pogba appeared to unintentionally hit Tottenham’s Serge Aurier with an elbow to the face.

For Mourinho, the Frenchman should have been given a red card for it.

"My opinion was we didn't deserve this result at all but we lost against a very good team," Moutinho told Sky Sports after the game. "I think we were unlucky because [Paul] Pogba should get a red card for an elbow on Serge Aurier.”

"If you want to speak about VAR, we have to go deeper than that," he added.

While Mourinho suggests that the Pogba incident would have been vital for the Spurs in the early going, he also assessed that his team still had its “best chances” after Manchester United scored its second goal.

However, the Spurs never managed to hit the back of the net after Heung-Min Son’s goal at the 40th minute.

“[Manchester United] gave what they can, and they gave it in two difficult situations,” the coach reflected. “When they scored the first goal and the second goal, our best chances in the game were after they scored the first and second goal. We chose that mentally, emotionally the team was strong, was committed and was fighting to win the match.”

In the end, Mourinho stressed that both Manchester United and Tottenham did a great job battling it out on the pitch.

“So I don’t want to go deep on my analysis,” he explained. “[I] simply give a compliment to a very good team that won the match and also give my compliments to a team that lost but full of players, full of professionals who gave everything they had to try to get a different result, which in my opinion we would deserve.”

Manchester United has been remarkable in away games. The win over Tottenham on Sunday saw the Red Devils extending their away win record to 10 this season.

For Mourinho, the reason for it is just simply because Manchester United is a “very good team.”

“They have a fantastic away record,” Mourinho said of Manchester United. “Why? They’re a very good team, but it’s the kind of defeat where I am not going home upset with my players.”
