When Patrick Mahomes left Thursday night’s game against the Denver Broncos with a dislocated kneecap, the Kansas City Chiefs were left wondering if their Super Bowl hopes had gone up in smoke. As the team awaits word on the severity of the quarterback’s injury, the defending AFC West champs, at the very least, know getting back to the playoffs will be more of a challenge than previously anticipated.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Friday morning that Mahomes is expected to miss at least three weeks. An MRI Friday afternoon will determine if the reigning MVP will be out any longer.

Kansas City’s championship odds have taken a slight hit, via BetOnline. The Chiefs had +850 odds to win Super Bowl LIV on Feb. 2 at the start of Week 7. Those odds have since moved to +1200, pending the results of the MRI.

If it’s revealed that Mahomes suffered torn ligaments and his season is in jeopardy, you can be sure those odds will plummet.

The New England Patriots are the heavy Super Bowl favorites with +225 odds. Kansas City is still considered to be their biggest threat in the AFC, though Tom Brady and Co. have separated themselves as the class of the league.

The Patriots beat the Chiefs in overtime at Arrowhead Stadium in the 2019 AFC Championship Game before beating the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII.

The New Orleans Saints have the second-best odds at +600. Mahomes’ injury moves the San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers ahead of Kansas City with +1000 title odds. Green Bay leads the NFC North at 5-1 and San Francisco is the only NFC team with a perfect record.

If Mahomes only misses a few weeks, the Chiefs should remain the favorites to win the AFC West. Kansas City is a game ahead of the Oakland Raiders for first place. The Raiders visit the Packers Sunday.

The Los Angeles Chargers were supposed to be Kansas City’s biggest challenger in the division. The Chargers are 2-4 and on the verge of falling out playoff contention midway through the season.

The Chiefs moved to 5-2 and dropped the Broncos to 2-5 with Thursday’s win in Denver.

Matt Moore played relatively well in Mahomes’ absence, completing 10 of 19 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown in the 30-6 win. With a bad Kansas City defense and upcoming games against the Packers and Minnesota Vikings, Moore will need to step up when the Chiefs look to him as their starting quarterback.

Kansas City has the AFC’s third-best record, pending the results of Week 7.
