After a wild year that included a new album, canceled concerts and a hospital stay, Kanye West and wife Kim Kardashian are taking the rest of the year off and reportedly canceled all their engagements until 2017. With the year almost coming to an end, we take a look back at the roller coaster ride that was 2016 for Kanye West.

January 2016

Kanye started off 2016 with a lot of hype surrounding a new album. Originally titled “Swish,” Kanye announced the album would arrive on Feb. 11 and released a few songs to promote it. Yeezy then changed the album name to “Waves” and announced the premiere of his Yeezy Season 3 collection.

The rapper also had a short-lived Twitter feud with Wiz Khalifa, after Khalifa accused Kanye of stealing the “wavy” movement from incarcerated rapper, Max B. This led to a back-and-forth between the two and even featured West dragging his ex-girlfriend and and the mother of Khalifa’s child, Amber Rose, into the fight.

February 2016

From “Swish” to “Waves” to “The Life of Pablo,” the album finally had a concrete name, and West premiered the album during his Yeezy Season 3 show at Madison Square Garden. Feb. 11 came with no album, and the rapper then delayed it. The album was finally released on Feb. 14 on Tidal after an appearance on “Saturday Night Live.”

The release of the album was a mess. Many couldn’t purchase the album on Tidal, and it didn’t even show up on the platform for at least two hours after his announcement. Following its release, Kanye continued to tinker with the songs, releasing new versions of the album with different versions of songs. To this day, a physical copy of the album has never been released.

June 2016

From March to May, not much happened for Kanye, although the rapper did stay active on Twitter, writing such tweets as, “My tweets are a form of contemporary art” and “No more CDs from me.” We did get new music from Kanye in June when he released the first single from the “Cruel Winter” album, “Champions.”

June also saw the release of Kanye’s controversial music video for “Famous,” which featured nude wax figures of Bill Cosby, Taylor Swift, Donald Trump, Kim Kardashian and West himself lying in bed together.

July 2016

The summer months saw the beginning of new feuds for Kanye. After the “Famous” controversy with Taylor Swift over using her name in the song, Kim Kardashian exposed Swift on Snapchat and posted a cell phone recording of Swift giving Kanye permission to use her name in the song.

The end of the month also saw the start of a beef Kanye has with Jay Z. “The Life of Pablo” rapper took to Twitter on July 30 and said the beef between Apple Music and Jay Z’s Tidal was messing up the music game.

August 2016

The following month, Kanye kicked off his Saint Pablo Tour, which became famous for its suspended stage and the rapper’s frequent rants. The August leg of the tour featured stops in Toronto, Canada, Buffalo, New York and Indianapolis, Indiana and remained pretty tame. But it was the next month when things began to unravel for the rapper.

September 2016

During a stop in Tampa, Kanye called out a frequent collaborator of his, Kid Cudi, after Cudi called him out during an interview. While on stage, Kanye told the crowd, “I feel so disrespected. Kid Cudi, we two black men in a racist world. I wore skinny jeans first! I got called names before you, bro!... Don’t ever mention my name in a bad manner! None of y’all!... I birthed you!”

A few days later, Kid Cudi checked himself into rehab, and Kanye took the stage to wish Kid Cudi well.

October 2016

If you were to single out a month where 2016 took a turn for the worst for Kanye, October was the month. Towards the middle of the month, Kanye stopped one of his shows to call out Jay Z and the Apple-Tidal feud. The rapper revealed that his children have never played with Jay Z’s children and revealed the reason why Jay Z wasn’t on Drake’s song, “Pop Style.”

The end of the month also saw the beginning of a string of canceled concerts beginning with Kanye cutting a festival performance short after his wife was robbed in Paris. Kanye postponed several of his tour dates following the incident.

November 2016

November featured Kanye angering many of his fans when he declared his support for President-elect Trump, telling one crowd, “I told y’all I didn’t vote. But if I voted, I would’ve voted on Trump... Celebrities are our influencers now. Just look at our president, he wasn’t in politics and he won.”

After his Nov. 18 Trump rant, the rapper went on one of his most infamous rants which featured him performing only three songs and cutting a concert short. “I’m not always going to say things the perfect way, the right way. But I’m going to say how I feel... Get ready to have a field day, press. Get ready, get ready. Because the show’s over,” he told a Sacramento, California crowd.

Following the cancellation of a few more shows, Kanye officially canceled the remaining 21 dates on his tour and found himself in the hospital for eight days, suffering from exhaustion and temporary psychosis stemming from sleep deprivation.

December 2016

Kanye West finally made his return to the public this month, but he caused even more controversy when he met with Trump at Trump Towers for a meeting. Sporting a new blonde hairstyle, two allegedly discussed “multicultural issues” and, according to Trump, are good friends.

It’s also reported that Kanye is working on new music, and footage of him with producer Pete Rock surfaced online.
