Iconic fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld died in a hospital in Paris on Tuesday, after a period of ill health that lasted for a few weeks. He was 85 years old.

Though the exact cause of death was unknown, reports said he was urgently hospitalized Monday.

Best known as the creative director of Chanel, Lagerfeld missed two of the brand’s shows in Paris on Jan. 22. The company, however, said he was tired.

"Mr. Lagerfeld, artistic director of Chanel, who was feeling tired, asked Virginie Viard, director of the creative studio of the house, to represent him,” the company said in a statement after he missed the second show.
