Lakers Rumors: LeBron James Trade Briefly Considered By Los Angeles Amid Anthony Davis Reports

A new report indicates that the Los Angeles Lakers at least considered doing what would’ve seemed to be an impossibility. According to Bleacher Report’s Ric Bucher, owner Jeanie Buss contemplated moving LeBron James just a few months after he signed a max contract with L.A.

The report states that Buss was furious over the idea that agent Rich Paul leaked rumors about the Lakers pursuing Davis. Buss reportedly considered cutting ties with Paul, who represents both Davis and James, by sending the four-time MVP elsewhere.

Paul and Buss eventually cleared the air, according to Bucher.

Even if the thought of trading James briefly crossed Buss’ mind, it’s hard to believe that James ever had a real chance of being dealt. While NBA analyst Jeff Van Gundy recently made headlines by suggesting that the Lakers shouldn’t dismiss the notion of trading James this summer, Los Angeles never would have moved him before this season’s deadline when they were still trying to make the playoffs.

The Lakers will be very active this offseason after a disastrous 2018-2019 campaign. That means trying to sign a star free agent to play alongside James, not looking for players to take his place.

Los Angeles is expected to continue their pursuit of Davis. The recent injury to Brandon Ingram could make a deal even more difficult, though finishing high in the draft lottery would exponentially increase their chances of acquiring a star through a trade.

James is set to make $37.4 million next season and $39.2 million in the 2020-2021 season. He’s got a player option for $41 million in two years.
