Lauren Conrad was sorry to her "The Hills" co-stars after she distanced herself from them following her exit from the show, but she explained that she needed it to recover emotionally.

Conrad sat with her former "The Hills" co-star Whitney Port on Tuesday for Dear Media's "With Whit" podcast. During their conversation, she apologized for not talking to them after she left the show and explained that it was necessary for her to do so, assuring Port that "it had nothing to do with you personally," but she just felt that it was time for her to stay away from the cameras.

"I stopped filming and then I just kind of needed a clean break for a minute to kind of emotionally recover. I took some time off and then obviously moved out of L.A.," Conrad said in the podcast as quoted by Us Weekly.

"It was one of those things where I was like, ‘OK, well, this isn’t like a healthy space for me anymore.’"

Conrad and Port haven't seen each other since they became moms. Conrad has two sons, Liam, 3, and Charlie, 11 months, with husband William Tell. Meanwhile, Port shares 3-year-old son Sonny with husband Tim Rosenman.

"It’s just really being like, ‘OK, like I need to live my life.’ I lived a certain way for so long and, like, as much as I am appreciative and I love you and I love so many people we’ve worked with, like, you know, there is certain, like, toxic elements there and it’s really hard," the "Sweet Little Lies" author continued.

Conrad added that she needed to step away from the world. She needed to heal and figure out what she wanted because they both started working in front of the cameras at such a young age and at the time, she felt that it was high time to figure out who she was.

"And I did it in such a weird way. Like, I need to do this on my own now with no other voices or just, like, literally living my life for me," she said.

In 2017, Conrad and Tell welcomed their firstborn. According to an insider, she enjoyed the quiet time at home with her son. The new mom at the time enjoyed walking her baby and dogs in the neighborhood sometimes, according to a source.
