  • It was 0-0 even after the extra-time at Wembley on Sunday
  • The title was decided on penalties
  • 21 out of 22 penalties were scored

Goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher was the hero of the day for Liverpool FC as he scored an important penalty to help the Reds win the League Cup on Sunday.

Liverpool defeated Chelsea to claim a record ninth League Cup title at Wembley Stadium. There had been multiple goals ruled out during the game, with very little to separate two excellent teams. Even during the penalty shootout, 21 out of the 22 penalties were scored.

The Reds bagged their first trophy of the 2021-22 season after Kelleher's Chelsea counterpart Kepa Arrizabalaga, who was brought in before the final whistle, especially for the penalty shootout, blasted the decisive penalty over the bar.

In the opening 10 minutes of the final, American forward Christian Pulisic shot straight at Kelleher in the Liverpool goal from close range inside. Negating a fast start from Chelsea, Liverpool bounced back hard. While they soon began to have more possession, they were struggling to break Chelsea's resolute defense.

Thirty minutes into the first half, Chelsea keeper Edouard Mendy made an incredible double save, first saving Navy Keita's driving shot before denying his countryman Sadio Mane from a close range.

Despite Chelsea's efforts to keep Mohamed Salah silent, the Egyptian forward found an excellent opportunity to score in the second half. However, Chelsea defender Thiago Silva dove and cleared the ball just off the line.

Minutes later, Liverpool were overjoyed as Joel Matip headed past Mendy from a close range. However, after a VAR review, the goal was ruled out as center-back Virgil van Dijk was interfering with play from an offside position in the buildup.

Liverpool's latest signing, Luis Diaz, had a couple of chances but he could only shoot straight at Mendy.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp heaped praise on Kelleher, calling him the "best No. 2 in the world."

"Alisson Becker is the best goalie in the world, for me. There are goalies out there but this goalie is absolutely insane. But to be 100 percent honest, for me Caoimhin Kelleher is the best No.2 in the world as well, especially for the way we play," Klopp said in the post-match conference, according to Liverpool's website.

Liverpool won their quarter-final tie against Leicester City in a penalty shootout, thanks to Kelleher. The young goalkeeper then kept a clean sheet against Arsenal in both the semi-final legs.

"He had an incredible game [final]. The game he played tonight was absolutely incredible. I'm not 100 percent sure I have the full story of the whole game but I can remember at least two incredible saves – probably there were more. So, he proved that the decision to line him up was absolutely right. And then in a very spectacular penalty shootout, he showed the whole range of his skillset. First and foremost, he's a goalkeeper but he finished one off with his really skilled feet. Top-class," added Klopp.
