For now, its official name is still unknown, to avoid confusion, in this article, let’s refer to it as Google Card.

Leaked Google Card Details

The latest information about Google’s physical payment card comes from Techcrunch. The site claims that it has obtained descriptions and proofs that the search engine giant is indeed developing a physical payments card as well as virtual debit cards. “The Google card and associated checking account will allow users to buy things with a card, mobile phone, or online,” the site reveals.

How The Google Card Functions?

Based on the latest report, the Google Card links to a Google app that enables users to quickly track purchases, lock the account, or check balance. Additionally, the Google physical payments card will be co-branded with various partner banks. This includes the Stanford Federal Credit Union and CITI.

The site also claims that another source confirmed that the search engine giant intends that the Google Card would be the foundation of the Google Pay app to challenge Apple Pay and Apple Card. At present, Google Pay accommodates peer to peer payments and online payments by linking to a standard issued payment card. With the arrival of the Google Card, the company hopes that it could expand the use of Google Pay and boost the potential of the company as a fintech juggernaut.

Other Google Card Details

Just like the Apple Card, the Google Debit Card will serve as a tap to pay digital cards, as well as a physical card. There will be a separate virtual card number that users can conveniently use for doing business with various accredited online retailers. Unfortunately, the report does not say when the search engine titan is planning to launch the Google Card or if it will ever be released to the consumers.

However, in a statement issued by Google, it somehow confirms that it is currently considering possibilities of collaborating with credit unions and banks in the US to provide smart checking accounts via Google Pay.
