  • LeAnn Rimes shared nude photos of herself that show the psoriasis covering her back
  • The "I Need You" singer penned an essay about her psoriasis journey
  • Rimes said she was tired of hiding her skin condition

LeAnn Rimes, who was diagnosed with psoriasis when she was a child, recently got candid about what it is like to live with the skin condition.

Rimes went fully nude in photos she shared on Instagram Thursday, which marked World Psoriasis Day. The snaps show the psoriasis covering the 38-year-old singer's back.

"So much of my journey, both personally and within my creations, my new chant record and podcast coming out soon, has been excavating pieces that I’ve been hiding and bringing them to the light," she wrote in the caption. "It’s been and still is a journey of allowing them out and welcoming and reintegrating those fragments back into wholeness."

Rimes has made a name for herself in the music industry, but this time, she wants to use her voice to highlight another part of her that she believes many will able to relate to.

"This is finally my time to be unabashedly honest about what psoriasis is and what it looks like," she said.

"You know when you say something you’ve been holding in for so long, and it’s such a sigh of relief? That's what these photos are to me. I needed this," Rimes continued. "My whole body—my mind, my spirit—needed this desperately. With today being World Psoriasis Day, I thought this would be the perfect time to share my story."

The Mayo Clinic defines psoriasis as "a skin disease that causes red, itchy scaly patches, most commonly on the knees, elbows, backside and scalp."

Rimes also penned an essay for Glamour in which she details her journey with psoriasis.

The "I Need You" hitmaker was diagnosed with the skin condition when she was 2 years old. At the time, 80% of her body, except for her hands, feet and face, was covered with painful red spots.

Rimes revealed that she always tried to hide her psoriasis whenever she was in public. She also "tried everything" to treat the spots, including steroid creams and medications, but it was only in her 20s when she found a solution that helped clear her skin.

Stress is among the common triggers for psoriasis, and with everything that has been going on in 2020, Rimes' psoriasis flare-ups came back. However, the singer said she was tired of hiding her condition and has reached a point in her life where she "just [wants] to break out of that cage."

"I hope anyone who also kept themselves small has the courage to step outside of that cage," she wrote. "When we allow ourselves not to be held in, our lives come back to us."

Another celebrity who has been open about her struggles with psoriasis is Kim Kardashian West, who shared her journey with the skin condition last year.
