KEY POINTS

  • Liverpool is being linked to an array of strikers ahead of the transfer window
  • The Reds are expected to pursue Inter Milan's Lautaro Martinez or Roberto Gagliardini
  • Two more goalscorers are said to be on the Merseyside outfit's radar

Liverpool seems to be ready for a Plan b in case top target Romelu Lukaku decides to stay at Inter Milan.

The Reds are expected to land another Diogo Jota-type signing in the next transfer window.

Recent reports have linked Inter Milan’s Lukaku to Liverpool, but it has become apparent that a move for the Belgian striker could be difficult.

However, Liverpool isn’t ready to scratch off Inter Milan players in the club’s pool of targets.

Should Lukaku insists to stick with Nerazzurri, the Merseyside outfit will explore a possible transfer deal for either Lautaro Martinez or Roberto Gagliardini, Anfield Central reported, citing unnamed sources.

International Business Times could not independently verify this information.

Apparently, Liverpool is well aware that signing Lukaku could be far-fetched at the moment.

With that in mind, the Reds are “keeping a close eye” on Martinez and Gagliardini. However, it is the latter that has been deemed more viable.

“They’re also monitoring Lautaro Martinez and Roberto Gagliardini although the former is valued very highly by Inter and so will be difficult to sign even with their precarious finances,” the article read. “The latter is an interesting name and not one that I would have expected Liverpool to be linked with but with Wijnaldum having left the club and for free , it’s understandable that they won’t want to spend too much to replace him.”

Following an impressive back-to-back seasons with the reigning Serie A champions, Lukaku became one of the biggest draws in the forward market this summer.

However, the 28-year-old previously hinted that the new Inter Milan manager has great plans for him.

“I am staying at Inter,” Lukaku said. “I've already had contact with new manager Inzaghi. Maybe I shouldn't say that yet... but it was a very positive conversation. I feel good at Inter.”

An earlier report stated that two more goalscorers are on Liverpool’s radar heading into the opening day of the next transfer window.

It is said that Jurgen Klopp’s side will try to swing a deal for AC Milan attacker Hakan Calhanoglu, whose current deal with Rossoneri is set to expire in the coming weeks.

Calhanoglu could leave Milan as a free agent, and Liverpool is already working on his possible move to Merseyside.

Aside from Calhanoglu, the Reds have also set their sights on Patson Daka, another prolific striker who has been the top performer of Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg.
