Longshot Ruler on Ice wins Belmont on sloppy track, pays $51.50
Over a very sloppy track, Ruler on Ice proved his meddle as a mudder and won the Belmont Stakes, making his move on the stretch and holding off the closers.
Juan Velasquez lost his left stirrup and almost fell off Animal Kingdom out of the gate and sat behind the pack before firing on the outside, but he didn't have enough to catch the leaders and finished sixth.
At 24-1, Ruler on Ice paid $51.50 to win. Stay Thirsty places to pay $19.40, and Brilliant Speed came in third, paying $7.90. The exacta paid $464.
Shackleford led for most of the race but on the final stretch, the pack was shaken up and Ruler on Ice emerged and held on for the win.
