Fans of VH1's "Love & Hip Hop: New York" were excited to find out that rapper Remy Ma and her husband Papoose were joining the cast for Season 6. The show, which premieres Monday, will follow the 35-year-old "Conceited" rapper as she adjusts to life outside of prison. Remy was released from the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women in New York last year after serving six and a half years behind bars.

In an interview Monday with US Weekly, Remy Ma and Papoose opened up about what fans can expect to see from them this season and revealed why they initially turned down an offer to join the cast.

“I felt like a lot of people didn’t know me outside of my music and outside of my case, and people didn’t know [Papoose] outside of his music, period," Remy Ma said about why they finally signed on the dotted line. "I think when people watch it, they’ll be like OK, they are normal people.”

She continued, “We’re both very active in our careers. A lot of people feel if you’re on ‘Love & Hip Hop,’ your career is over… and we feel like we can be the ones to open the doors for people who are actively doing stuff."

The rapper revealed when she and Papoose were first approached about the show, they were hesitant to join because of all the drama and fighting.

“[Papoose] was like, ‘I don’t know, have you seen that show?'" she said. “Once I seen some of it, I was, ‘Oh, no, no, no. We’re not doing that.'"

Remy Ma said it was a meeting with executive producer Mona Scott-Young that made then reconsider coming aboard.

“She explained how she wanted to get back to what she originally wanted the show to be about," Remy Ma recalled. "The show is called ‘Love & Hip Hop,’ and that’s what she wanted. She’s like, ‘I want it to be about love; I want it to be about Hip Hop.’”

Papoose added, "Basically, there’s never been no one on the show who actually lived up to the title. No disrespect to nobody, but I say a majority of those who was on there I don’t think they embody what we have and can live up to the actual title of the actual show.”

As previously reported, Remy Ma and Papoose will join other new cast members Cardi B, Young B, Mariah Lyn, rap duo BBOD, and DJ Self. Yandy Smith and her husband Mendeecees Harris, Peter Gunz and his wife Amina Buddafly, Tara Wallace Rashidah Ali and Rich Dollaz are all returning.

“Love & Hip Hop: New York” Season 6 premieres Monday at 8 p.m. EST on VH1.
