Pilots for Germany-based airline Lufthansa announced Sunday that most are willing to strike after pay-increase requests were ignored by the airline following a mass vote.

A 5.5% pay increase is being requested by the Vereinigung Cockpit union for 2023 along with an updated adjustment for inflation. The vote showed that 97.6% of pilots agreed with the possible strike.

The pilot's union VC board member Marcel Groels said in a statement that the vote “doesn't yet necessarily lead to strike measures, but it is an unmistakable signal to Lufthansa to take the cockpit staff's needs seriously.”

"We are showing we are ready to talk," he added.

Pay negotiations for pilots have been talked about six different times but Lufthansa has still failed to make any current offers, according to the union.

Lufthansa is also dealing with issues with its other staff members that work on the ground that led to a strike last week. This strike caused 1,000 flights to be canceled.

Staff shortages have also recently forced the airline to cancel thousands of flights.
