A 31-year-old man fatally shot his 2-year-old daughter to death amid his wife's birthday celebrations. Police said the accused intended to shoot his wife, but the bullet accidentally hit the child.

The tragic incident happened at a residence in the Thai village of tambon Pak Nakhon Tuesday night, reported Bangkok Post.

The accused, after realizing the child was dead, turned the gun on himself. Chaowarin Chorncharas, who is the assistant village head, is in critical condition after suffering a bullet wound to his head.

Police said the family had gathered at the wife's grandmother's house when the shooting happened. The accused was intoxicated when he pulled the trigger.

Police were called to the house Tuesday at midnight. On arrival, the officers found the child, identified as Nichaphat Chorncharas, dead from a gunshot. Her body was found in a pool of blood in a bedroom on the second floor.

The child's mother, 27-year-old Wanwipha Chorncharas, was seen sobbing near the body. Though she was bleeding from her ear, police said she did not suffer any bullet wounds.

Officers who searched the house discovered Chaowarin with the bullet wound. Police also retrieved a 9mm pistol with six cartridges from the house.

Investigation revealed that Chaowarin and a few others were drinking during the party. A few hours later, the 2-year-old asked to borrow Chaowarin's mobile phone because she wanted to play games before going to bed. Chaowarin tried to look for his phone but was unable to do so. An argument soon broke out between him and his wife after she accused him of being too intoxicated to even find his phone.

Upset over her remarks, Chaowarin barged into the bedroom where Wanwipha and her daughter lay and aimed the gun at his wife. He pulled the trigger, but the bullet accidentally hit the child, who was on the bed. She bled to her death at the scene, reported Thaiger.

A similar incident was recently reported in India where a 25-year-old man shot his brother and sister-in-law while the couple was celebrating their daughter's eighth birthday. The man, identified as Moolchand, allegedly fired four rounds from his pistol at his brother, Mohit Sharma, and his brother's wife, Pooja.
