A Florida man was charged after he admitted to critically injuring a newborn baby who was under his care. Aaron James Bordelon, 29, said he attacked the 16-day-old child when the baby woke him up shortly after a recent feeding.

Police said Bordelon was arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse and aggravated child neglect. He remained in jail Tuesday, held in lieu of $22,500 bail.

The baby is currently in critical condition at Brandon Regional Hospital, suffering from skull fractures and severe traumatic brain injury.

Bordelon told deputies he "forcefully" picked up the baby and admitted "this is my fault." After the incident, he told investigators the infant's breathing slowed and there were bruises under the child’s eyes and on the eyelids.

Bordelon did not call for immediate medical attention at the time, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. According to a press release, Bordelon attempted to conceal the bruising on the newborn with makeup.

"Abuse in any form is unacceptable and this case is especially tragic and emotionally difficult for our detectives as it involves an innocent and defenseless child," Sheriff Chad Chronister said.

There were several incidents in the past where people caring for children, sometimes their babysitters, abused them. In some cases, the abuse led to deaths.

In January, a babysitter pleaded guilty to killing a child after she battered the 15-month-old to death in a desperate bid to make the baby cry. Lavar Harris, 38, from Wilmington, Delaware, assaulted the child several times in February 2018 along with fellow babysitter Tameke Wright, 23.

On the day of the tragedy, the two babysitters assaulted the toddler, but when Harris told Wright that the boy had stopped crying, he hit the child that caused his death. Wright reportedly told Harris the toddler needed to be hit in the back of the head.

In another horrific incident in 2018, a cruel babysitter trapped a toddler inside a washing machine and laughed while filming the incident. A disturbing video surfaced online showing the 2-year-old pressing his hand against the door in a desperate bid to escape.
