A man was killed at a Burger King in Frederick, Maryland, after he reportedly tried to intervene in a fight between a woman and another man. The suspect has been arrested but police continue to investigate the shooting.

The Frederick Police Department (FPD) said in a statement that Jaion Antonio Penamon was pronounced dead at the scene after 20-year-old Darin Tyler Robey shot him multiple times.

“Officers from FPD and partnering agencies responded to the incident location at approximately 7:15 p.m. Sunday evening. The initial investigation determined Robey and a female got into an altercation inside the restaurant establishment where the incident occurred,” the statement said.

Penamon, whose age has not been revealed, “attempted to intervene in the altercation” when Robey shot the victim multiple times “in the vestibule of the restaurant.”

The FPD has asked for any witnesses who have knowledge of the incident to contact authorities even if the suspect has been arrested as the case remains under “active investigation.”

After law enforcement responded to the scene, the FPD urged people to “avoid” the area around 100 Block of Routzahn’s Way as investigations continued. The police department also clarified in a tweet that “the incident did not involve a robbery attempt,” contrary to rumors surrounding the case.

The latest shooting follows a string of shooting incidents across Maryland over the past few weeks. Maryland State Police have started investigating the “suspicious” death of a woman who suffered an apparent gunshot wound outside her Talbot County home during the weekend, WBFF reported. Autopsy results are still pending, but the woman has been identified as 33-year-old Marta Merina. The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit is leading the probe into Merina’s death.

Also earlier this week, Justin Kyle Marshall from Pennsylvania, 34, was arrested after he allegedly shot his girlfriend, Tristan Shifflet of Hagerstown, Maryland, in the neck, the Hagerstown Police Department said, WFXR TV reported.

Authorities were alerted about a shooting on Christmas Day and responded to the scene but Marshall fled before law enforcement arrived. Shifflet died of her injuries at the hospital, and Marshall was arrested in West Virginia on Sunday morning.
