  • Manchester United is expected to bolster its defense this summer
  • Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate to sign a center-back
  • Three renowned center-backs are now linked to a move to Old Trafford

Ahead of the summer transfer window, Manchester United is already linked to a handful of potential signings.

The Red Devils are expected to have a busy summer as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to be planning a major revamp in his squad, and one of the areas likely to be filled is the back department, particularly center-backs.

As early as now, three notable defenders are already believed to be on Solskjaer’s radar.

Among the center-backs earmarked by the Old Trafford outfit, Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane is arguably the biggest name on the list, English publication The Telegraph reported (via The Faithful MUFC).

According to the renowned British outlet, Manchester United top brass has ordered scouting experts Darren Fletcher and John Murtough to recruit players ahead of the summer as Solskjaer “craves” for a center-back.

The report adds that the pair is now keeping tabs on Varane, who is considered as one of the best center-backs of his generation and has been an impressive player for Los Blancos.

Varane boasts a stunning resume as he has won every major title with Real Madrid since joining the La Liga champs from Lens. He also won the World Cup with France in 2018 and has become a reliable defender for Zinedine Zidane this season.

Aside from Varane, Man United is also being urged by the team’s captain Harry Maguire to make a move for Brighton center-back Ben White, according to European transfer guru Duncan Castles.

According to Castles, Maguire is asking for a “center-back partner” and wants a player who can complement his game as well as in-depth knowledge of the English top-flight football culture.

White, who currently has a price tag of around £20 million ($28 million), has helped his former team Leeds United to Championship league title last season.

The 23-year-old has also become a regular for Brighton, having started in all 27 English Premier League matches in his English top-flight debut season.

Another star defender drawing interest from Manchester United is AC Milan captain Alessio Romagnoli.

Recent reports state that Rossoneri is considering selling the veteran center-back after deciding to leave the back responsibilities to his teammate Fikayo Tomori.

Romagnoli has been AC Milan’s leader for years, but the 26-year-old has failed to make his mark in the Serie A side this season. Ultimately, the captain fell out of Stefano Pioli’s pecking order and was even excluded in Rossoneri’s draw with Manchester United in the first leg of their Europa League Round of 16.

Romagnoli’s contract is set to expire in June 2022, but a contract renewal seems unlikely to happen.
