  • Manchester United is linked to a transfer move for defenders outside the Premier League
  • The Red Devils are pursuing AC Milan captain and center-back Alessio Romagnoli, a report says
  • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed talks of Eric Bailly's contract extension

Manchester United might have just added a defender to its transfer wish list.

Goal scoring hasn’t been much of a problem for the Red Devils this season. However, the problems in the back department have become quite obvious. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to bolster his defense in the summer, with a few defenders from outside the English Premier League already viewed as candidates.

Among the biggest names recently being linked to Manchester United is AC Milan captain Alessio Romagnoli, Italian publication Il Milanista reported.

According to the report, Solskjaer's side is keeping tabs on Romagnoli while AC Milan is considering selling the center-back, having figured it would be better to let Fikayo Tomori handle the back responsibilities instead.

Romagnoli has been Rossoneri’s leader for years, but the 26-year-old has failed to make his mark in the Serie A side this season. He eventually fell out of Stefano Pioli’s pecking order and was even excluded in Milan’s draw with Manchester United in the first leg of their Europa League Round of 16 tie.

The defender is still tied with Rossoneri until June 2022, but the report adds that a contract renewal seems unlikely to happen.

However, Milan manager Pioli downplayed his captain’s dwindling form this season. According to the former Juventus star, Romagnoli shouldn’t be blamed solely as the entire team needs improvement.

“[Alessio] Romagnoli is not the culprit,” Pioli recently told reporters. “We need to improve our collective performance but Alessio has played a lot this season."

Aside from Romagnoli, the outlet also said that United has put AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma on its radar.

This season, Red Devils center-back Eric Bailly has barely played for Solskjaer. The defender has been dealing with injuries that saw him miss 20 of Manchester United’s 28 Premier League matches in the current campaign.

Despite the seemingly concerning setbacks in the defensive end, the Norwegian has yet to offload any of his current defenders and even confirmed that talks regarding Bailly’s contract extension are already ongoing.

“We have started talking to Eric [Bailly] and Eric’s representatives,” Solskjaer told reporters at his a recent press conference. “Eric is keeping fitter for longer and you can see his performances as well. I have been very happy with him.”

“His playing style has made him miss too many games because 100 games, that’s not enough for the period that he has been here,” the manager continued. “He is getting more and more robust. He is one we are talking to.”
