  • Manchester United is linked to a move for Borussia Dortmund star Manuel Akanji
  • Donny van de Beek could be involved in a possible deal for Akanji
  • The Red Devils have been pursuing Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland

While Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho remain on Manchester United's priority list of top targets, the Red Devils have also set their sights on another Borussia Dortmund star.

In an attempt to add a world-class talent into its squad this summer, Manchester United has included Dortmund center-back Manuel Akanji on the club’s transfer wish list, 90min reported, citing unnamed sources.

According to the report, the Red Devils view Akanji as a “long-term partner for Harry Maguire,” the club’s captain who is rumored to have been urging Manchester United to sign another exceptional defender.

What’s even more interesting is that the report also stated that Manchester United is considering including last summer’s signing Donny van de Beek to serve as leverage in any potential transfer deals this summer.

Van de Beek failed to make an impact in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad since his move from Ajax last year, having been featured in only two English Premier League games this season.

Hence, the report divulged that Manchester United is now open to the idea of parting ways with the Dutch midfielder.

The said decision was made in an attempt to save some money. It was also noted that Manchester United has set the record straight with Borussia Dortmund that Van de Beek is likely to be part of any bid they are about to make this summer, including Akanji’s potential transfer.

Akanji is currently rehabilitating after incurring a torn thigh injury. He has been instrumental to the Bundesliga side, having made 18 German top-flight starts this season.

The Swiss defender will enter the final year of his current deal with Dortmund, but Manchester United is expected to make a move at the end of the season.

Despite the apparent interest in Akanji, it is widely known that the Red Devils are still chasing Dortmund’s dynamic duo Halaand and Sancho, with the former touted as the club’s top target.

Manchester United is believed to be holding on to the strong connection of Solskjaer to his fellow Norwegian in order to complete the aforementioned blockbuster transfer.

It can be recalled that Solskjaer had previously hinted at the possibility of reuniting with his former player, teasing they will be waiting for how things will play out “later on.”

“I keep in touch with Erling [Haaland] and it’s great to see him become the player he has become and I know he’ll work to improve all the time,” the Red Devils boss said last month. “He’s a Dortmund player and we just wish him well there and let’s see what life will bring later on.”
