  • Ralf Rangnick thinks his side could have done better against Young Boys
  • Mason Greenwood put the Red Devils ahead, but Fabian Rieder forced the draw prior to halftime
  • Rangnick admits that he wanted to experiment with his personnel

Ralf Rangnick gave Manchester United fans a few surprises during their UEFA Champions League match against Young Boys, and the legendary tactician gave his ruling regarding his team’s 1-1 draw.

“The first half-hour, I thought we did okay, we had a few unforced errors even in those first 30 minutes but at least we had control on the game. I think we should have been minimum 2-0 up, if not 3-0 up. We could have scored three or four goals but after we conceded the equalizer, we weren't defending high enough, we weren't proactive enough and we could have also conceded two or three goals,” Rangnick told BT Sport in the post-game presser via Manchester United's official website.

Goal-scoring prodigy Mason Greenwood gave Manchester Untied the lift that they needed early in the match, scoring the first goal thanks to a beautiful cross from Luke Shaw a few seconds into the ninth minute.

However, Young Boys were able to level with the Red Devils as an errant pass from Donny van de Beek to the erratic Aaron Wan-Bissaka found its way to Fabian Reidier at the 42nd minute.

The outcome had little effect on the bigger picture as Manchester United’s slot in the knockout stages was already assured regardless of the result against Young Boys.

In the pursuit of getting to know his personnel better, Rangnick also handed out debuts to the teenagers on the squad while also giving 35-year-old goalkeeper Tom Heaton his first-ever Red Devils appearance.

Charlie Savage and Zidane Iqbal also had their debuts as substitutes, while youngsters Amad Diallo, Teden Mengi, Shola Shoretire and Anthony Elanga all had their time to shine.

Rangnick is yet to present his transfer strategy to the public in the upcoming winter transfer window, but giving the youngsters some experience as veterans Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Maguire and David de Gea rested back at home in England.

The manager admitted that he was trying to experiment with the lineups because he wanted to preserve some players for their match against Norwich City on Saturday, December 11.

Manchester United now awaits who they will face next in the Round of 16 in the Champions League, while they look to put pressure on the top four teams in the Premier League.

They have a stretch of winnable games through January and February, with their next match against a top-flight team being in March against Manchester City.

"There will be chances for everybody to stake a claim, especially with so many games at this time of year. What I want to see is every single player striving to make the most of every chance they get," Rangnick stated.
