KEY POINTS

  • Cristiano Ronaldo is playing the voice of reason in the Manchester United locker room
  • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been in hot water this season, punctuated by a 5-0 loss to Liverpool this past weekend
  • The Norwegian's future will be determined by his performance in the next three games

Manchester United is going through a lot of uncertainty and the prodigal son, Cristiano Ronaldo, is doing all he can to keep them together.

As reported by Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News, their sources allege that Ronaldo has spoken with his teammates and urged them to still support Solskjaer despite what they think of him.

Ronaldo and Solskjaer’s history with each other go back decades, and it could be this connection that is speaking from deep inside the Portuguese superstar to help his teammate-turned-manager.

The 36-year-old has featured prominently in Solskjaer’s lineup this season as the center-forward, pushing prolific youngster Mason Greenwood to the wing, an adjustment that he is still figuring out how to navigate.

The same report also mentions that Manchester United has kept Solskjaer around because they have no alternatives to name to the position just yet.

If Manchester United were to fire Solskjaer, the common line of thinking would be that Darren Fletcher would take the reins.

However, the volatility of the situation at Old Trafford and Fletcher’s relatively unproven skills as a manager have prevented the club higher-ups from doing so.

It was reported yesterday that the unpopular Norwegian will still be taking control of the team ahead of their match against the Tottenham Hotspurs on Sunday, October 31 after Sir Alex Ferguson made an appearance at the club’s Carrington training ground.

Solskjaer became public enemy number one at Old Trafford after the manager’s head-scratching decisions through much of this season like the lack of playing time for Jesse Lingard and Donny van de Beek, further exacerbated by their 5-0 loss to Liverpool last weekend.

Three managers have been pegged to take the Manchester United job had upper management decided to pull the plug on Solskjaer, but each of them has their own hesitations from fully committing.

Turbulence has finally taken hold of Manchester United, and its fans believed for the longest time that it was only a matter of time before their club would go through it.

A strong showing against Leeds United and Newcastle United in the early part of the season was simply too good to be true, and internal issues have finally reared their ugly head.

With Solskjaer remaining on the sidelines, their next fixtures against the Tottenham Hotspur, Atalanta and Manchester City will be crucial to his job security.
