KEY POINTS

  • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is awed by Erling Haaland's talent and may check out his availability
  • Haaland's list of suitors is growing heading into the next transfer window
  • Liverpool, Real Madrid and Barcelona are among the teams hoping to acquire Haaland, reports say

Manchester United may have one player on its radar in Erling Haaland, one of the sought-after names heading into the next transfer window. Several clubs have been linked to the Norwegian striker, but the Red Devils could be a surprise team to enter the mix.

This speculation was fueled by Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's recent admission that he has been "following" the progress of the 20-year-old football player.

"Erling will have a fantastic career. I’m following Erling. I've always said that," he said when he spoke to Norwegian outlet VG. "Was it 18 months we had together or something? Almost two years, maybe. A wonderful time. He will definitely have a great career for both Norway and his club."

He did not rule out possibly making a move for the Borussia Dortmund star, who is one of the most prolific scorers in the game today. However, Solskjaer is aware that he will be in for a battle in the event the Red Devils decide to ramp up the chase for Haaland. Other clubs linked to the Norwegian player include Liverpool, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

"We will do what we can to become a better team, then he will do what he can to become a better player. Where does he end up? I do not want to say anything other than that, that I wish him all the best. Which choice he makes may be up to him,” Solskjaer said.

In the event United does seriously target Haaland, it will cost them big. The 20-year-old holds a hefty release clause of $92 million. He is still under contract with Dortmund until 2024, and the stated fee is due to become active by 2022.

In a previous report, it was also mentioned that Chelsea FC may try its luck at obtaining Haaland. Thomas Tuchel prefers to keep things under wraps, for now, as his way of showing respect to Dortmund, which still holds the rights to the Norwegian striker.

"Now it is February and there is a long way to go. As you get to know me, you will know I will not talk about other players who are under contract,” Tuchel said. "This is the type of respect I show. Everything else will be decided behind closed doors. I'm sorry."

But like Solskjaer, all that could change by the next transfer window. It will be an interesting chase for the services of Haaland, undoubtedly one of the young talents that multiple clubs will try to add to their respective sides.
