KEY POINTS

  • Manchester United is sticking with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but a move for Brendan Rodgers would not be so bad as well
  • Rodgers' philosophy of attacking football could work well with the wealth of scorers at Old Trafford
  • His style of play has also been well-received among other managers

Manchester United remains committed to Ole Gunnar Solskajer but should they ever decide to give him the pink slip, Brendan Rodgers slots in perfectly.

The current manager of Leicester City is the latest favorite to replace Solskjaer, and the way he manages his football teams should also be applicable to that of the men from Manchester United.

During his time as the manager of Swansea City, Rodgers discussed how he wanted his players to be carrying themselves on the pitch.

“The football philosophy is very much about positive football. If you want to define it: we like to play attacking creative football but always with a tactical discipline. The template for all of our work is our organization,” remarked Rodgers as quoted by the Manchester Evening News.

The British outlet noted that this is exactly how Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward wants the Red Devils to be playing.

“What is especially pleasing is the way this progress has been achieved with a blend of young, homegrown talent and top-class recruits, playing attacking football in the best traditions of Manchester United," Woodward revealed after they signed Solskjaer to an extension in July.

This is best exemplified by Leicester City’s 4-2 dismantling of the already porous Manchester United defense when the two clubs met in mid-October at the King Power Stadium, the home field of the Foxes.

Prolific youngster Mason Greenwood drew first blood by scoring the first goal for Manchester United, but Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans broke through and drew the game at 1-1.

Turkish Caglar Soyuncu put up the Foxes by a goal after a scramble inside the box at the 31st minute.

However, it seemed as if the Red Devils were set on mounting a comeback after Marcus Rashford scored at the 82nd minute to level the score at 2-2.

But Jamie Vardy, Leicester City’s favorite son, put one past keeper David de Gea a minute later and Patson Daka added a fourth goal to seal the deal.

Manchester United is in dire need of Rodgers’ philosophy of high-intensity, attacking football, something that Solskjaer has consistently failed to do during his time as manager at Old Trafford.

Rodgers’ style of play has been heavily praised by other managers, like former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique who recognized the 48-year-old’s love for aggressive football and his trust in young players.

He has everything that Manchester United needs right now to salvage the season, and with the growing confidence that they can steal him away from Leicester City, it could only be a matter of time before he makes his way to the Old Trafford sidelines.
