  • Manchester United is linked to a move to Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland
  • Pundit Paul Merson urges the Red Devils to ditch Haaland and go for Harry Kane instead
  • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have hinted at his desire to sign the Norwegian striker

Veteran pundit Paul Merson only fancies seeing Manchester United pursuing Tottenham Hotspur talisman Harry Kane.

Manchester United is once again linked to a massive transfer move for a top prospect.

It can be recalled that the Red Devils engaged themselves in a long courtship with Borussia Dortmund ace Jadon Sancho last summer, and now Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side is expected to chase the youngster’s teammate, Erling Haaland.

Weighing in on who Manchester United should sign in the next window, Sky Sports’ Merson pointed out that it should “only” be Kane.

According to the former Arsenal star, Haaland may have all the potential but what Manchester United needs at this point is a striker who has already proven himself in the English Premier League.

“If I’m Manchester United, I’m doing all I can to buy [Harry] Kane,” Merson said. “I know Erling Haaland is on a lot of radars, but there should be only one person on Manchester United’s radar: Harry Kane.”

“If they want to close the gap to Manchester City, they need someone to come to that club and score goals the minute he walks into that club like Harry Kane can,” he added. “Because Kane has done it, year in, year out, in this relentless league. Who is to know Haaland is going to hit the ground running in this league? You don’t have time in this league. Timo Werner was scoring goals left, right, and center, but came here (in the Premier League) and has struggled.”

Merson further emphasized the need for Manchester United to end its eight-year championship drought and win the title as soon as possible.

For the pundit, it’s Kane and not Haaland who can help Solskjaer claim his first title with the Red Devils.

“Sometimes I watch Kane and think: ‘Am I the only one who sees this?’ I’d be paying everything to sign him. He’s got the entire package,” the 52-year-old questioned. “Manchester United needs to win the league now, not in five or six years’ time. Don’t get me wrong, Haaland is an unbelievable prospect. But for me it’s a no brainer–I’d want to win the league now!”

Due to the strong connection with his former manager and fellow Norwegian Solskjaer, Haaland’s move to Old Trafford seems to be likely despite his huge price tag.

Red Devils boss Solskjaer, on other hand, hasn’t confirmed anything yet about his former player but didn’t completely close the door either.

"Erling [Haaland] is going to have a fantastic career,” Solskjaer recently told Norwegian newspaper VG. "I follow Erling. I have always said that.”

"Was it 18 months we had together or something like that? Almost two years, perhaps,” the manager added. “A fantastic time.”
