KEY POINTS

  • Mandy Rose was released from her WWE contract after her explicit content got leaked
  • Sources reported that WWE had known about Rose's fan page and the nature of her content
  • Rose had also been aware that pushing the envelope on her content could get her fired

Former NXT women's champion Mandy Rose is out of WWE after spending the past seven years with the company, and the details leading up to her subsequent release has left WWE fans confused.

Pro wrestling reporter Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful announced that Rose had been released from her WWE contract due to "the content she was posting on her FanTime page."

Sapp was also quick to note that those in upper management had a tough time deciding on whether to release her or not as she had been a valuable member of NXT's women's roster.

Rose had been maintaining a fan page outside of her WWE contract and had some of her explicit content being leaked, which appeared to have played a role in her release.

Legendary pro wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer corroborated Sapp's story and confirmed that the decision to take the title off Rose and hand it over to Roxanne Perez was not supposed to happen and that it was a "last-minute decision based on the fact she was getting fired."

Wrestling Observer Live host Bryan Alvarez reported that Rose was "very much caught off guard by the firing" as he mentioned on the latest episode of the podcast.

WWE had quietly loosened its grip on performers being able to have third-party platforms based on Drew Gulak's quickly deleted tweet thanking "Papa H"–a reference to current WWE chief content officer Triple H.

While it appeared that WWE was completely fine with such setups, the explicit nature of Rose's content may have been a step too far for a company that has fully leaned into its PG-13 rating.

According to Alvarez on the same podcast, Rose had been making more money off her fan site than her WWE contract and that she was making "main roster money".

In a follow-up story behind their paywall, Sapp reported that Rose was fully aware of the game that she was playing with WWE management, stating that she had "indicated to others that she realized the content and nature of her page could get her in trouble with management."

Following her release, NXT quickly updated its Twitter banner to reflect Rose being out of the company.

Alvarez then made comments on the podcast that WWE was fully aware of Rose having a fan site and while upper management was initially fine with it, the former NXT women's champion continuously pushing the envelope on her content had higher-ups thinking "this isn't gonna fly."

However, there is hope for Rose to return to the company down the line as per Alvarez, but he noted that she really is gone from WWE in the meantime.

All in all, it is a messy situation that has a lot of moving parts, but the fact of the matter is that Rose playing chicken with WWE management had reached a boiling point and the top-tier promotion drew its last straw when her content got leaked, essentially forcing their hand to release her.
