Matt Lauer fell from the pinnacle of his career in November 2017 when NBC fired the anchor over a sexual harassment complaint filed by a network employee. Despite the allegations made against him, his ex-wife, Nancy Alspaugh, believes he should be given a second chance.

The 60-year-old first married Alspaugh in 1981, but the two split in 1988. Ten years later, the television personality tied the knot with Annette Roque. However, the two are reportedly in the middle of finalizing the details of their divorce settlement.

Although Lauer and Alspaugh are no longer together, she believes people are failing to see past his termination from the “Today” show. The “Fearless Women” author recently told Entertainment Tonight outsiders are unaware of all the good Lauer has done because of his sexual harassment scandal. “Matt has always been a support to his family and loved ones,” she explained.

“He has done so much quietly to help others and to support important causes. He donated a tremendous amount to my autism charity, ACT Today. Many people don’t know that through all his hard work, he has been able to give back and has made a difference in this world. Matt never did this for the thanks and would like nothing more than to continue to give back to society.”

Alspaugh went on to praise Lauer for his generosity and for being a great father to his children. “I don’t think he’s been given a chance to defend himself, and I hope one day soon he will be able to tell his story,” she said.

While the author is sure the public will hear Lauer’s side of the scandal, she acknowledged that he is currently laying low due to his tough break up with Roque. “Their very public divorce has been a different experience than what Matt and I faced,” she shared.

Despite the end of another marriage, Alspaugh believes Lauer will find love and success again. “I see him starting a new life and career. He is too talented not to have a great career. He made mistakes, but he can move on and upward.”

A source revealed Lauer’s life at home has experienced a positive shift now that he has managed to make peace with Roque. “Things really have settled down. Matt and Annette are getting on and they’re both spending time with their kids. They hope to settle the divorce very soon,” a source told Page Six.

Lauer is expected to pay Roque around $20 million in their divorce settlement.
