KEY POINTS

  • Melania Trump is slated to appear at a rally today, but has almost entirely avoided campaign appearances for over a year
  • The rest of the Trump family are vigorously dedicating themselves to reelection
  • A spokesperson said that COVID-19 concerns have limited the first lady's itinerary

Melania Trump will make a rare in-person appearance today with the Trump campaign, the White House told CNN.

Her planned presence at the Pennsylvania rally would be her first such appearance in more than a year, since her appearance in June 2019. She did make a speech at the Republican national convention and show up to the presidential debate, but has largely avoided campaign appearances.

This event does not, however, indicate a new status quo. CNN reports that she does not have any other campaign events scheduled and will not even be giving an individual speech at the Pennsylvania rally.

Her spokesperson, Stephanie Grisham, told CNN that COVID-19 restrictions have limited her schedule, a problem likely exacerbated by her contracting the virus. Still, the rest of the Trump family seemed to have no qualms about public appearances.

Meanwhile, Melania Trump's stepchildren all have full itineraries this week. Ivanka Trump will appear in Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina and Florida. Eric Trump and his wife will collectively visit New Hampshire, Michigan, Nevada and Arizona. Donald Trump Jr. will head to North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

Melania Trump has historically been the least active member of her family when it comes to campaigning. She made only a handful of speeches during the 2016 presidential election. The campaign has even brought on Tiffany Trump, the less public child of Donald Trump’s second marriage, to try and sell Trump to LGBTQ voters.
