Microsoft has long been known for its Windows OS for PCs worldwide. However, the company's recent financial reports say that it is earning more with its cloud server services. Is Microsoft slowly transitioning into a whole new tech firm?

According to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commision’s files, Microsoft's Windows platform isn’t its major source of income anymore. Under CEO Satya Nadella’s leadership, the company has successfully found ways not to solely rely on the Windows PC OS for its income anymore.

According to the report, sales of Microsoft’s cloud storage and server services have increased by 24 percent, surpassing the Office collection of apps. Since the company earns more with cloud services, it may not rely on Windows as it main source of income in the future.

Since the advent of computers, Microsoft has long been a household name due to the Windows OS. Compared to other personal computer operating systems, Windows has been popular for home use due to its compatibility with apps for work, entertainment and other household electronic processes. Microsoft’s name has been synonymous with the Windows app for a few decades now.

The Windows OS has long been a flagship service for Microsoft. In the past two decades, many updates have come out for Windows which drastically improved its functions and capabilities and also pushed other apps to have better compatibility with it. Microsoft being almost ready to leave it could kick off a potential transition of the company to a different industry.

Microsoft Azure, the company’s cloud service system, has been making waves as of late. Azure is Microsoft’s system competitor against Google Drive and Amazon Web Services. The cloud service has gotten clients such as the LinkedIn site and even PlayStation with cloud-based gaming.

For now, Microsoft has yet to announce any big updates for Windows, though the company will reportedly make an appearance in the upcoming Samsung Unpacked this August for an app reveal. Microsoft Azure also recently announced its Dedicated Servers feature which allows users to make secure private servers for their own use.
