A minor boy, who got "married" to a 20-year-old woman, killed himself after his parents refused to acknowledge the wedding.

His bride also attempted suicide with him Friday night but was spared death after the hook she used to hang herself broke.

The victim, hailing from Hyderabad -- the capital of southern India's Telangana state, met his girlfriend Neelima on Facebook three months ago and decided to get married after a brief courtship, reported India Today.

However, the boy's parents didn't approve of the couple's plans of getting married, following which, he left home. The deceased, whose identity has been withheld as he is a juvenile, was a student while Neelima had been doing part-time jobs. The duo rented a house in the neighborhood and had been living there since.

"The couple got married a month ago in a temple, but their parents were against their decision. So, they were residing in a rented room. The couple had a fight about the same and decided to kill themselves," a senior police official told The New Indian Express.

The police added that the duo was in an inebriated state when they decided to take the extreme step.

However, the suicide pact went awry after the hook on which Neelima had tied her rope broke off. While the boy died immediately, she fell and sustained minor injuries. She immediately ran outside to inform the neighbors. People who realized that the boy had died alerted the police without touching the body.

The boy’s father rushed to the spot after the police informed him. Though a case was registered for a suspicious death, the victim's father did not want to file a complaint against the woman for suicide abetment, police said.

In 2018, a 20-year-old man had committed suicide by hanging during a video call with his girlfriend allegedly over "love failure." The clip of their conversation and extreme act had then gone viral. The clip showed the youngster hanging himself from the ceiling fan after a brief conversation with the girl, wherein he is heard talking about suicide. The girl was also heard telling him not to do so. However, in this incident too the parents of the deceased did not file a complaint against the girl.
