A search is underway for a West Point cadet who was declared missing Friday afternoon by the military academy in New York state and is believed to be in possession of an M4 rifle. The cadet, whose name has not been released, did not take any ammunition or magazines with him and poses a greater threat to himself than to others, according to reports.

A West Point press release noted that the cadet was last seen around 5:30 p.m. on academy grounds and was scheduled to compete in a weekend of military skill competitions. He did not appear for the road march to start the competitions, sparking a campus-wide search by staff and cadets.

Military police began their search of academy installations around midnight Saturday after initial efforts failed to turn up any sign. West Point also had increased military police patrols around the campus and for weekend events as a precaution.

Academy officials have since notified the New York State Police, Orange County Sheriff's Department, Coast Guard, and surrounding hospitals about the situation. The Coast Guard has been conducting searches of the nearby Hudson River and New York coastline while state police have deployed drones, K-9 units, and helicopters.

“I want to thank the local and state law enforcement agencies and emergency services for their tireless support,” 60th Superintendent U.S. Military Academy Lt. Gen. Darryl Williams wrote.

“We will continue to search with all means possible, on and off West Point. Safely locating the cadet remains our focus and number one priority.”

The cadet is reportedly in the Class of 2021.
