The infamous Memorial Day weekend crowded pool party at the Lake of the Ozarks may have had serious consequences, as one Missouri partygoer tested positive for the coronavirus, the Camden County Health Department said Friday. The partygoer visited several area bars on Saturday, May 23, and Sunday, May 24, and reportedly fell ill on Sunday.

The infected person visited Blackwater Jacks in Osage Beach from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 9:40 p.m to 10 p.m. on May 23. Blackwater Jacks was the location of a crowded pool party, with footage of the gathering widely circulated on social media. The infected person also went to two other area bars during the weekend: Shady Gators and Buffalo Wild Wings.

The owner of Blackwater Jacks, Gary Prewitt, has defended the party at his restaurant. In a letter on the restaurant’s Facebook page, Prewitt said “no laws were broken, social distancing is not a crime.” He also said temperature checks were given to guests by medical staff at entrances to the pool and hand sanitizer was provided to partygoers.

According to Missouri’s health department, the state has over 12,500 coronavirus cases and 738 deaths as of Saturday afternoon. Missouri was under a statewide stay-at-home order from April 6 to May 3.
