  • Mets could steal Realmuto away from Phillies
  • Realmuto has yet to re-sign new deal with Philly
  • Mets can afford Realmuto

The Philadelphia Phillies have yet to decide on what to do with catcher J.T. Realmuto and several factors have now come into play. The most notable of them all is the fate of the coming MLB season. Will it be altered, shortened or canceled? To date, the answer to that remains unknown.

As for the Phillies and Realmuto, whatever MLB officials decide will play an important role in their relationship. Acquired in February 2019, negotiations had started last February. But everything just got stalled when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out. Now, it has become a waiting game with the upcoming MLB season playing a vital role in negotiations and the decision-making process. Will a deal be struck?

There is no denying that Realmuto is someone that the Phillies would foolishly let go. If they fail to come to terms, several other MLB teams are likely to come knocking on the door. Right now, it is the New York Mets mentioned as the team that would come running. The reason behind this is that the Mets did pursue Realmuto before the 2019 season. He was supposed to include in the deal involving the Miami Marlins but nothing got done. Hence, it makes sense that New York would try to try their luck on Realmuto once more, the New York Post reported.

The Mets are trying to fill in the catcher position. They took in Wilson Ramos after failing to land Realmuto at the time. There is a chance that the 32-year-old could re-sign with the Mets. But if they can get a deal done for Realmuto, the difference is quite obvious. Considering they only have $76 million in the books, they have the financial room to accommodate the 29-year-old catcher.

But like the Phillies, the Mets decision will also hinge on the coming season. Most teams will experience financial strain and players will just have to lower their expectations. But the case of Realmuto may be different. If not the Phillies or the Mets, other teams are likely to try and offer him something better. The two-time MLB All-Star is too valuable to pass up, hinting that it all boils down to the numbers game.
