Phil (Ty Burrell) and Gloria (Sofia Vergara) will be spending a lot of time together in “Modern Family” Season 8, episode 11.

In “Sarge and Pea,” Phil and Gloria will volunteer to join Luke (Nolan Gould) and Manny (Rico Rodriguez) on their college campus tour. However, Phil and Gloria have very different ways of getting their respective children ready for the new chapter of their lives. Phil believes that Luke will survive college through exercise. Gloria, on the other hand, believes that Manny will survive by having a good heart. Their differences may cause problems for the two adult characters, but realizing that letting their boys go is the most difficult thing to do is what will also bring them closer to each other.

Meanwhile, a very emotional Cam (Eric Stonestreet) will complain about one parent who robbed him of a precious moment during Lily’s (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) dance recital. The next day, Cam heads to the coffee shop where Alex (Ariel Winter) works and sees the culprit there. Cam goes to extremes to uncover the woman’s identity, even if this means destroying his niece’s reputation.

Elsewhere, the Pritchetts will also do some bonding of their own. Jay (Ed O’Neill) and his children, Claire (Julie Bowen) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler-Ferguson), will be attending a wedding. While at the reception, they run into Dede (Shelley Long), Jay’s ex-wife. Worried that their parents would make a scene at the wedding, Claire and Mitchell come up with a plan to keep them apart. However, it seems that Jay and Dede will still bump into each other at one point.

“Modern Family” Season 8 is on a short hiatus for the holidays and will return with episode 10, titled “Ringmaster Keifth,” on Jan. 4. “Sarge and Pea” will air on Jan. 11 at 8:30 p.m. EST.
