In a shocking incident, a mother threw her 2-month-old twin daughters into a stream as she didn't want to keep them because they were born out of wedlock.

The incident took place in Mandi, a town located 268 miles north of India's capital New Delhi, on Sunday. Passers-by spotted the children's bodies in the water under a bridge and informed the police.

Investigators found that the mother dumped the bodies in the stream as the babies were born out of wedlock. The woman had eloped with her lover and gave birth to the twin girls. She wanted to go back to her husband's house and live with him. However, she knew her husband would not accept her if he came to know about the newborns.

So, she decided to dump them in the stream, police said, adding that the bodies had froth around the mouth, the Hindustan Times reported.

The accused woman has been arrested and is being questioned, the Tribune India reported. Police were looking into all possible angles in the case to ascertain if any other person was involved.

The bodies of the babies were sent for an autopsy at a local hospital to determine the exact cause of death. The report would confirm if the woman dumped the babies after killing them or threw them while they were alive.

Last month, a man in India killed his 9-year-old stepdaughter by throwing her in a river after his wife became pregnant with his child. The accused, identified as Yuvraj Salokhe, was arrested after the body of the child was retrieved from the river.

The accused recently married the woman. At the time of the marriage, he promised to take care of her daughter from the previous marriage. However, when she got pregnant, he started fighting with his wife over the older girl. He later decided to get rid of the child.
