A newborn baby was found dead inside a plastic bag that was dumped near the staircase of an apartment in Malaysia.

A food delivery driver alerted police after discovering the bag Wednesday. It also had a note written in Malay that read "please call police or Imam," the Borneo Post reported.

Officers found the baby, wrapped in a cloth, inside the bag. Initial investigation revealed that the baby boy was delivered the same day. The body was sent for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

"The baby, believed to have been born some six hours ago, was confirmed dead by a medical team at the scene and his body was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kota Kinabalu for an autopsy," Penampang police chief Mohd Haris Ibrahim told Daily Express.

It was unclear if the child was already dead when he was dumped at the location.

The delivery man, identified as 28-year-old Aaron Sydny, said this was the first time he came across something like this.

"At that time, I was on my way to pick up the goods and saw the package with the note... As soon as I read the note, in my mind I was expecting a baby in the package. I was shocked and shivered when I was informed that there was a baby in it," he said, local daily Sinar Harian reported [Google Translation showed].

Police have filed a case of concealment of birth by secret disposal of dead bodies. The charges could change depending on the result of the autopsy.

Authorities are asking for the public's help in identifying the child's parents. No arrests have been made yet.
