  • Gordon thinks Hamilton will be successful in NASCAR
  • The Mercedes driver once revealed what he loved about the American stock car

A NASCAR legend weighed in on Lewis Hamilton’s chance of succeeding in the American stock car series.

Many may have been fancying to see Hamilton competing in NASCAR. While it is still far from reality, four-time NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon made a bold prediction regarding how the Mercedes driver would have fared in his sport.

According to Gordon, he and Hamilton have the “same” set of qualities as drivers.

Hence, the 49-year-old is convinced that the seven-time Formula One champion would also get the job done in an American stock car.

"I have enough confidence in my abilities that I feel like had I taken that path, I would have been successful," Gordon said on the “Beyond the Grid” podcast. "Same for Lewis Hamilton.”

"When you have that ability and that talent to find the limit of the car and you have the confidence, drive and desire to push yourself in every aspect--mentally, physically, being completely dedicated to it, you are going to be successful in that discipline, for sure," he continued.

Aside from Hamilton, Gordon also likened himself to another Formula One star in Fernando Alonso.

For Gordon, Hamilton and Alonso both know how to ensure that the efforts of their respective teams are not being put to waste, a trait he also had during his time in NASCAR.

“To get there in F1 is so much different to getting there in NASCAR but I still think it takes the same amount of effort and the same type of personality,” the Hendrick Motorsports chief explained. "Most importantly, it takes the team around you to create that success and from what I can tell from both Lewis and Fernando [Alonso] is they recognize that.”

"They are very appreciative of being able to show their talents and being able to do that because of the people that put that race car on the track or the team that called the strategy that got them through the season,” he added. "That's what I would say I have in common with those guys."

In 2011, it can be recalled that Hamilton and NASCAR legend Tony Stewart swapped cars at the Walkins Glen International circuit.

Assessing the rare experience in 2019, Hamilton concluded that he “loved” driving the NASCAR, especially its “manual transmission.”

“I loved driving the NASCAR at Watkins Glen,” Hamilton said on “Around the Track with Jeff Gordon.”

“What I like about it, is that I love manual. I’m really an oldie, I love manual transmission. That’s something we don’t obviously have in Formula One and I wish that we did.”
