Fans of chicken wings -- a bar food classic -- are in for a treat on Wednesday. Every year July 29 is National Chicken Wing Day, a holiday first proclaimed in 1977 by then Mayor Stan Makowski of Buffalo, New York.

The buffalo wing was invented in 1964 at Anchor Bar in Buffalo after the owner tossed the usual scrap food in the deep fryer and coated them in butter mixed with hot sauce. While the traditional buffalo wing still follows that basic recipe, as time passed innumerable flavors for chicken wings emerged. "Whether you like them hot and spicy, sticky sweet or plain Jane and whether your prefer them served with blue cheese, plum sauce or celery sticks, chicken wings have to be the most versatile protein on the planet," the National Chicken Wing Day website claims.

With the holiday approaching, numerous restaurants are planning promotions and freebies to celebrate the holiday. Below are a few of the bigger chains offering deals on Wednesday. You can also check the National Chicken Wing Twitter feed here, which often promotes local shops participating in the holiday.

Hooters

The restaurant chain will be offering all you can eat wing deals on National Chicken Wing Day. Boneless wings cost $12.99, while traditional bone-in wings cost $14.99.

Hooters will also be running a photo contest. To enter you must use the hashtags #NationalChickenWingDay or #HootersMakesYouHappy on a post featuring a photo on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook. The photos will be judged by the involvement of Hooters, creativity and how well it represents the holiday and restaurant in a positive manner. The grand prize is 10 free chicken wings per week for an entire year. Further details about the contest can be found here.

East Coast Wings & Grill

The chicken wing chain is offering six free honey BBQ wings with the purchase of any entree on Wednesday. Honey BBQ was decided by a social media survey to be America's favorite flavor offered by East Coast Wings and Grill, winning 6.25 percent of the vote.

“It’s not a huge surprise that Honey BBQ took first place—it’s always a big fan favorite at our restaurants. We hope everyone enjoys National Chicken Wing Day,” said Sam Ballas, CEO of East Coast Wings & Grill, in a statement.

Hurricane Grill and Wings

The chain with locations across the country is offering dine-in, all you can eat wings for $12.99. That includes a side of fries or chips, but you have to purchase a beverage. Click here for further deals and a redemption code.
