Wednesday is National Girlfriends Day, a celebration of the women you love, be it your significant other or your best friend. Though this day is not a public holiday in the United States, it is popular on social media.

This day is to appreciate the part female friends or female partners play in one's life. There is no specific origin of this day and no rule as to how this day must be celebrated. The only thing to remember today is to recognize the importance of your relationships — platonic, intimate and everything in between.

Here are some sayings for Wednesday's holiday, collected from BrainyQuotes and Good Reads.

5. “One friend with whom you have a lot in common is better than three with whom you struggle to find things to talk about.” — Mindy Kaling
