For ages, dogs are considered man's best companion. Their unique attributes and characteristics make them very special, something other species can't match up to. But, among them, who is probably the best? Beyond doubt, it is the mutt.

One of the healthiest and cheapest breeds out there, the humble mutts are rarely in the spotlight. Unlike purebreds, they have fewer hereditary health concerns and don't require specialized care. This makes them ideal pets.

As we celebrate National Mutt Day this July 31, let's find out why you should get a mutt rather than a purebred.

1- They are cheap- The main reason why you should go for a mutt is they won't burn a hole in your pocket. While a purebred dog can cost anywhere from $500 to $3,000 depending on its breed, mutts come very cheaply. All you have to think about is the adoption fee imposed by the shelter. After all, every breed will love you the same. Besides, adopting a mutt means you won't contribute to overbreeding. It is also a way of saying no to puppy mills where commercial breeders profit from selling puppies without concern for dogs' health and wellbeing.

2- They are healthier and live longer- A mutt isn't prone to genetic disorders that result from interbreeding. That means it will live longer and require minimal vet visits. Mixed-breed dogs also get the best of both worlds. For instance, they may get the intelligence of a Border Collie and the loyalty of a Labrador, or perhaps the independence of a Shar-Pei and a Bloodhound's love for tracking.

3- It's good to give a mutt a home- You should adopt a mutt because you are giving the poor thing a loving home. A study by the Humane Society says nearly 75% of dogs in shelters are mixed. It's also worth noting that there are usually 6 to 8 million pets entering shelters each year. We don't want to see them euthanized, do we?

4- They look unique- Well, if you don't want your dog to look like your neighbor's, then go for a mutt. Mixed-breed dogs are unique and special that even puppies of the same litter can look very different. Moreover, you can be sure that your mutt is going to be unlike any other kind of dog out there.
