  • George Gervin commented on the best scorers in the NBA today
  • Gervin thinks Kevin Durant is as effective as him in terms of scoring
  • Durant is on the verge of exceeding Gervin

San Antonio Spurs legend George Gervin pointed out why he thinks the playing style of Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant is similar to his own.

In a recent talk with the “Knuckleheads” podcast, NBA Hall of Famer Gervin, who was known for his tremendous scoring ability, weighed in on some of the best scorers in the league today.

According to “Iceman,” Durant fairly resembles his effectiveness as a scorer and is just a cut above everybody in the league offensively.

“KD [Durant], man. He scored differently than me. But as far as putting it through the hole, he’s just as effective,” Gervin explained. “Once he gained that in-between game, he was even more effective. He’s just an unbelievable player, one of the top in the league.”

Surprisingly, numbers back Gervin’s claim. He and Durant are both four-time NBA scoring champs. As All-Stars, “KD” is on the verge of equalling Gervin’s 12 (9 NBA, 3 ABA) as the Nets forward now has 10. However, Durant has won the All-Star MVP award twice, while the NBA legend only copped it once during his entire career.

As for his defense, Gervin stressed that he may not be the best defender but definitely not a horrible one either.

“They say I couldn’t play any D [defense], but I could score so well so they’ll find something else to say about you,” the 68-year-old emphasized. “I took pride in guarding people, in going out and get ’em. I didn’t play on only one end, I wanted to stop you and then come down and score.”

At age 33, Gervin played his final game in the NBA. At the time, the Detroit native was playing for the Chicago Bulls alongside Michael Jordan. Unfortunately, Gervin didn’t have a monumental farewell as his last NBA game was Game 2 of the Bulls’ 1986 Eastern Conference first-round series against the Boston Celtics, the same night MJ recorded his career-high 63 points.

"I don't know how I stayed on the bench that long," the NBA legend said of his final game in an interview in 2018. "He [Jordan] going to get 63 (points) but let me pass him the ball a couple of times."

Durant, on the other hand, is meant to exceed Gervin at the same age. At 32 and coming off a devastating injury, Durant has been exceptional in his NBA return.

“For mere mortals in this game it’s impossible to think about,” Nets Head Coach Steve Nash told the New York Post of Durant. “It’s still impressive to watch after all these years.”
