A New York Knicks legend revealed one of the secrets of becoming tbecome an offensive threat in the NBA for years.

Back in the 90’s, John Starks was considered as one of the most lethal scorers in the NBA. During his glory days with the Knicks, Starks rivaled with Indiana Pacers icon Reggie Miller.

The two scoring shooting guards battled inside the basketball court for almost a decade and their epic rivalry went down to become one of the greatest duels in NBA history. Two years ago, Starks wrote a piece on The Players’ Tribune where he admitted that he stole a unique offensive move from Miller.

According to Starks, he learned a lot from Miller and based on his experience, the Pacers legend apparently is the master of coming off a pick-and-roll play, an offensive strategy which Starks believe is one of the secrets in becoming a scoring threat in the NBA for years.

“The way he (Miller) could find cutting lanes and picks to get open. It was almost scientific,” Starks said about Miller’s pick-and-roll game,

“I learned a lot from him about how to come off of pick-and-rolls, how to free yourself up. That’s one of the secrets to longevity in the NBA, now or back then — you steal certain moves from other players. I stole one of his baseline moves,” Starks revealed.

The Knicks legend also emphasized that Miller is really different from other guys in the NBA. As per Starks, guarding a guy like Miller was the “toughest assignment” he ever had in the NBA.

“Reggie is different from every other guy on this list. Reggie was extremely active whether he had the ball or away from it, and guarding him was probably the toughest assignment in the league because of that,” Starks emphasized.

During Miller’s prime, it wasn’t only Starks who had problems defending him. Apparently, most of the players who defended Miller back then were known as tough defenders and really knew how to focus on defense.

“He wasn’t a guy you could relax on. You couldn’t take a play off with him. A lot of defending Reggie was just about focus,” Starks pointed out.

Aside from Miller, Starks also had some epic battles with Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. In fact, Starks also recalled how he almost repeated his iconic dunk on Jordan against the Pacers during a crucial playoff game.
