KEY POINTS

  • Darren Collison appears to be ready to suit up for another NBA team
  • Collison’s performance with the Lakers was hardly impressive
  • Russell Westbrook cherishes his brief reunion with Collison

Darren Collison embarked on an ambitious journey of hopefully making an NBA return since retiring in 2019.

As expected, the layoff showed and the 10-day deal the 34-year-old guard came to a close on Wednesday, January 5.

There was a slight chance that the 6-foot guard would get another 10-day deal or a regular roster spot, but such never happened.

Regardless, Collison is thankful for the opportunity and thanks to the Lakers for the opportunity on Instagram.

But if one takes a closer look at the caption of Collison’s post, that part when he said “stay tuned” sends feelers that he may still be looking to play on with another NBA team.

As of this writing, there is no official word on which team that would be.

But given there are still a lot of teams who are struggling to have the required number of players for games, it won’t be surprising to see the California native suiting up for another club soon.

With the Lakers, Collison played in only three games wearing the signature purple and gold colors.

Compared to his career numbers, the 6-foot guard hardly made an impact.

In those games, he averaged just 1.3 points and 1.3 rebounds in 12.3 minutes of action.

Being out of action for about two years, Collison’s meager averages are understandable.

In his career, the 21st overall pick of the 2009 NBA Draft owns a stat line of 12.5 points, 5.0 assists, and 2.7 rebounds.

Although he hardly made a difference, it also allowed Collison to reunite with Russel Westbrook.

Both played together manning the backcourt of UCLA more than a decade ago.

“It’s great to see him back in the NBA,” Westbrook said. “He’s a good friend of mine, we’ve talked throughout the years when he was out of the league and obviously during the league, competing against each other. Competing with each other in college and now with the Lakers back in L.A., it’s great.”

With the interest of playing NBA ball once more, it will be interesting where Collison can play next.
