KEY POINTS

  • LiAngelo Ball's dream of playing NBA ball remains a dream for now
  • He was among the players the Pistons cut ahead of the 2020-21 season
  • Ball could still be signed by other teams but his chances are not looking good

Seeing three of LaVar Ball’s sons play this 2020-21 NBA regular season would have been epic. The only problem is that it will no longer happen after LiAngelo Ball got cut by the Detroit Pistons.

The 22-year-old was among the players the Pistons waived after their preseason match against the New York Knicks, James Edwards III of The Athletic reported. Other players who were also let go were Anthony Lamb and Louis King. Ball did not appear in either of the Pistons' two preseason games.

Despite getting cut, the 6-foot-5 player still has a chance to make it to the regular season. This is with the assumption that some NBA team takes him in. But for now, only Lonzo and LaMelo Ball are certain to play this coming season.

The development comes not long after Ball was signed to a one-year, non-guaranteed contract. He signed the deal on Dec. 2. After playing for the Oklahoma City Blue in the G-League, Sports Illustrated suggested that he was likely seeking a roster spot on the Pistons’ G-League roster.

It is a setback for Ball, who will have no choice but to continue pursuing that NBA dream. Aside from the G-League, he has had stints in the Junior Basketball Association with the Los Angeles Ballers, a league started by his father LaVar.

The middle child of LaVar also had a stint in Lithuania (Lithuanian Basketball League) together with his brother LaMelo before his G-League stint. He attended college at UCLA but got suspended following a shoplifting issue that happened when the team visited China.

Ball faced tall odds of cracking the Pistons roster this season and was probably aware of that. As mentioned in a previous report, Detroit had a busy offseason as the team hopes to rebound this 2020-21 season.

Among those the Pistons took in at the time were Killian Hayes, Isaiah Stewart, Saddiq Bey and Saben Lee from the 2020 NBA Draft. They also added Jerami Grant, Delon Wright, Dzanan Musa and Rodney McGruder via trades.

In free agency, they signed Mason Plumlee, Jahlil Okafor, Josh Jackson and Wayne Ellington. Among the mainstays that head coach Dwane Casey has are veterans Derrick Rose and Blake Griffin.
