KEY POINTS

  • Patty Mills's flexibility gives the Brooklyn Nets a big boost to go for an NBA title this season
  • Mills will go down as one of Australia’s greatest players, according to a sports pundit
  • Patty Mills is ably filling in the role of Kyrie Irving for the Nets

Patty Mills has been a bright spot for the Brooklyn Nets, highlighted by the fact that he entered the NBA record books for being the first player to go 10-for-10 from the three-point in the first two games to start a season.

Mills went 7-of-7 from beyond the arc against the Milwaukee Bucks and then 3-of-3 in the next game against the Philadelphia 76ers, NBA Australia posted on Twitter.

This early, sports pundits are betting on Mills to win the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award for the 2021-22 season.

Originally, Mills was seen to be a backup for Kyrie Irving.

But with the 29-year-old star grounded for his anti-vaccine stance, the Australian guard is getting the chance to show his stuff.

So far, it has been working for Nets coach Steven Nash with Mills now becoming a beloved part of the Nets fan base.

Sports pundit Mark Brandon of Screen Sports feels that Mills' flexibility and ability to adjust helped him reach where he is at right now.

“He knows what his game is. He is not trying to be someone he’s not. He’s there, the 6th man, 7th man, he has adjusted his game. He will go down as one of Australia’s greatest athletes,” Brandon said when he appeared on the Sports For All PH podcast

At 33 years old, Mills made clear why he signed up to join the Nets. His response was hardly surprising, aligning with what Brandon said.

But most importantly, it is all about helping Brooklyn win an NBA title by being a piece of the puzzle.

“Something very intriguing for me. It’s like any chance I have to learn and to continue to develop and grow, I welcome that. So in terms of piecing the puzzle together, it’s gonna be exactly that. Working out what fits and being able to bring the pieces together,” Mills stated when he spoke to the media last month.
