KEY POINTS

  • Jahlil Okafor is set to become a free agent after being waived by the Nets
  • The Warriors could explore a deal with Okafor to address their big man needs
  • Okafor’s performance has dipped after his first two years with the Sixers

Jahlil Okafor initially appeared to be set for a second coming with the Brooklyn Nets, a team that could put his height and expertise to good use.

The third overall pick of the 2015 NBA Draft was part of the deal that sent DeAndre Jordan to the Detroit Pistons alongside Sekou Doumbouya.

Unfortunately, Okafor will not get the chance to be part of the Nets again, at least for the coming season.

The Nets announced via their official Twitter account that they requested waivers on Okafor on Friday, September 10. This means that the 6-foot-10 center will be hitting the free-agent market soon.

Okafor was traded to the Nets on December 7, 2017. This came after he found himself severely displaced with the Sixers focusing on Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons.

His production took a dramatic downturn in the 2017-18 season.

Unfortunately, Okafor never found a way to recall the old form he had in his rookie year. He averaged 17.5 points, 7 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 1.2 blocks at that time.

After a forgettable first stint with the Nets, Okafor went on to play for other NBA teams. That included the New Orleans Pelicans and Pistons.

But somehow, the native of Chicago failed to hit his stride and was given spot minutes.

Once he clears waivers, it will be interesting which team would pick him up. Some clubs could give him a chance like the Golden State Warriors.

The Dubs need some help in the middle and Okafor could be a player worth checking out.

Ironically, the Warriors are a team linked to another former Sixers player in Simmons. But with the Aussie’s huge contract, closing a deal may be complicated.

For now, there is no telling which team would take a chance on the former top pick. Even if Okafor does get a call, he will need to work his way back up the ladder.

The best to expect is a league minimum for now. Some teams could put him to good use if he fits into the right system.

Aside from the Warriors, it will be interesting which NBA team would be open to adding a big man who is likely to come off the bench.
