KEY POINTS

  • DeMarcus Cousins finds himself waiting for a team to pick him up
  • His injury history has held him from successfully recalling his All-Star form
  • Cousins is likely to end up getting a minimum deal for the coming season

DeMarcus Cousins finds himself in a familiar situation although it is far from comforting.

He remains one of the prominent names without an NBA team for the coming season, but this could change in a snap.

However, one thing the All-Star center may have to accept once more is that only a minimum deal could be offered.

With most NBA teams headed into training camp, rosters have almost been filled.

He spent last season with the Los Angeles Clippers, playing in 30 regular-season games. The numbers continue to dip for the temperamental big man, yet another reason why some clubs are opting to prioritize other free agents.

In 30 games, Cousins put up 7.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, and an assist in 12.9 minutes of action.

The last time “Boogie” put up good numbers was when he was still with the New Orleans Pelicans during the 2017-18 season. He normed 25.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, 5.4 assists, and 1.6 blocks in 48 regular-season games.

Injuries are to blame for Cousins’ game decline. Such has hampered his comeback trail from 2017 to 2020.

He managed to stay away from the injury bug the last two seasons although this was because he played sparingly.

The best Cousins can hope for is a backup role on a minimum deal. Here are some teams that could take a chance on the four-time All-Star.

Los Angeles Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers have several roster spots open although their priority is a point guard.

Dwight Howard has returned, and Anthony Davis is still there. But if the Lakers decide to get another big man this season, Cousins could be worth a look.

Brooklyn Nets

The Brooklyn Nets, like the Lakers, don’t have much purchasing power.

Especially with word going around that DeAndre Jordan could be traded, Cousins could be another All-Star worth considering to provide some tough interior help.

Miami Heat

The Miami Heat could put Cousins to good use to toughen up their frontline.

Although Bam Adebayo is around, the fact remains that they need a backup center who could spell the young cager.

PJ Tucker was signed but lacks the height. On a minimum deal, Miami could use someone like Cousins to shore up its frontline.

Golden State Warriors

A team that has been aching to get help in the center position is the Golden State Warriors.

James Wiseman is around but is a player that needs further development. Kevon Looney remains enlisted, but somehow head coach Steve Kerr needs a veteran who can toughen things up in the middle.

With that said, this could lead to a reunion with “Boogie” next season.
