KEY POINTS

  • Klay Thompson is hoping to be back by the start of the 2021-22 NBA season
  • Thompson proves his shooting form is still intact even with a long layoff
  • Steve Kerr needs to push players to step up with key personnel out nursing injuries

The Golden State Warriors could use lift right now, particularly in scoring. Stephen Curry and Draymond Green are trying to hold down the fort in a season that has technically been better compared to last. Someone who could have made a difference on both ends is Klay Thompson.

The 31-year-old guard remains sidelined, missing another season due to an ACL injury. However, it appears the shooting form of the three-time NBA champion remains sharp.

Thompson was spotted working out and hoisting some shots from beyond the arc with former Warriors player and now staffer Zaza Pachulia, TMZ reported. The five-time NBA All-Star drilled in 12 straight three-pointers, showing his injury has not hampered his shooting touch.

It was during the 2019-2020 NBA Finals when hoop fans last saw Thompson in action. He has gone through two ACL injuries but is hopeful about making a basketball return soon.

Right now, he is not able to run. He is rehabbing by running on a treadmill underwater as he tries to work his way back to shape. Thompson is hoping to return by the opening day of the 2021-22 NBA season.

Hence, all head coach Steve Kerr can do now is try to figure out how to get through the season. They are within striking distance of making it to the NBA playoffs but face tall odds. Curry suffered a tailbone contusion and is being kept out. The former NBA MVP is aching to play, but his status is listed as day-to-day.

Kelly Oubre Jr., someone who has been mentioned in potential NBA trade moves, is also on the injured list for the Dubs. The 25-year-old injured his foot when the Warriors faced the Houston Rockets on Thursday.

Hence, Kerr needs to bank on his remaining stars and hope they can buy Curry and Oubre time. Aside from Green, rookie James Wiseman may be tasked to play more, along with Andrew Wiggins.

The NBA trade deadline is nearing, and there is still no word whether or not the Dubs will try to pull off something. There are notable names in the free agent market, an option that Kerr and the Warriors may resort to if they want to make the most out of their 2020-21 NBA campaign.
