KEY POINTS

  • Andre Drummond could add double-double numbers and experience to the Phoenix Suns
  • Drummond could help guide young players and toughen up DeAndre Ayton
  • The Suns' impressive run could be sustained if they manage to land Drummond

The Phoenix Suns have made big strides this 2020-21 NBA season and can only get better.

As of this writing, they are in second place in the Western Conference standings and ride high on a four-game winning streak.

Head coach Monty Williams has found a way to turn things around with Devin Booker anchoring the club. They do have a young core, but room for improvement will always be open.

There will be some interesting free agents left by the March 25 NBA trade deadline that Williams may explore. There is perhaps no other player that may pique his interest than Andre Drummond.

In the eyes of some unnamed NBA executives, Drummond could be a notable target by the Suns. A reason for this is they lack a dominant big man.

Though they have rising young stars such as DeAndre Ayton, there is no question that the 6-foot-10 center can further hone up the frontcourt. Aside from that, he could toughen up other centers and players moving forward.

Drummond is a certified double-double machine any team would love to have. Before he was forcibly sat out by the Cavs, the All-Star center was averaging 17.5 points, 13.5 rebounds, and 2.6 assists in 28.9 minutes of action.

However, the fact remains that the Cavaliers have underwhelmed this season but are expected to be more concerned by the fact that Drummond is an upcoming free agent.

Like other NBA teams such as the Los Angeles Lakers or Boston Celtics, the Suns could be waiting for a buyout deal between Drummond and the Cavs. This would allow Phoenix to spend less and add a veteran player to boost their playoff chances.

Depending on what happens to their season, the option to re-sign Drummond will follow.

The Suns could also go after PJ Tucker of the Houston Rockets. The 35-year-old is a proven role player, but Drummond is seen more as a tempting fit.

However, getting him will not be easy since the two-time NBA All-Star prefers to join a team with high chances of winning the 2021 NBA title.
