KEY POINTS

  • Joe Johnson was waived by the Detroit Pistons before the season started
  • He was named MVP of the BIG3 before the Pistons signed him
  • He was drafted in 2001, same batch as Tyson Chandler, Pau Gasol, and Tony Parker

He almost had it in the bag, only to be taken away from him.

The signing of veteran guard Joe Johnson sent NBA fans in frenzy as the Detroit Pistons recognize the talent and experience that he can bring to the team. Unfortunately, he was waived by the team after playing four pre-season games for Detroit.

In an interview posted by TMZ Sports, the 38-year old scorer is not forcing himself to be signed by any NBA teams. “I don’t know if there is a possibility to be honest with you, but we’ll see if something comes up,” said “Iso-Joe”. He bared that he is still working out and he rated his body as 100% ready”.

The 6-foot-7 guard also opened about what happened with him and the Pistons. "I was banged up with a lot of injuries, didn't get a chance to really rest," Johnson said. "So, it kinda hurt me. Which is why I got waived but I'm cool with it."

Before the Detroit offer came, he was playing at the BIG3 for the Triplets and was dominating the league by scoring at will. He set the record for most points scored in a single season with 175 points, a testament to the scoring prowess of the seven-time NBA All-Star.

He was also named as the BIG3 Most Valuable Player and sank the winning shot against the Killer 3’s to give his team the championship.

“If an opportunity comes about and it's worth it and a team is serious, of course I'll jump on that opportunity,” said Johnson. "I don't think I have to plug myself for that. I think my resume pretty much speaks for itself."

Johnson holds career averages of 16 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.9 assists in his 17 seasons in the league, including stops with Boston, Phoenix, Atlanta, Brooklyn, Miami, Utah, and Houston. He was drafted 10th overall in the 2001 NBA draft – the same draft class with Pau Gasol, Tyson Chandler, and the recently retired cagers Tony Parker and Zach Randolph.
